De dorpen in de periferie van Bethlehem staan bekend om hun oude olijfbomen. In feite bevindt de oudst bekende olijfboom ter wereld zich in het dorp Al Walaja aan de rand van deze heilige stad. Deze bomen zijn begeerd omdat hun olijfhout<\/a> een exotische burl heeft. Deze bomen worden twee keer per jaar gesnoeid om ervoor te zorgen dat ze mollige olijven blijven produceren om te beitsen en te persen. Toch heeft het volk van Bethlehem deze gesnoeide boomstammen<\/a> historisch gerecycled door ze in blokken<\/a>, platen en blanco’s<\/a> te snijden, die ze drogen en vervolgens in handwerk<\/a> om te verkopen aan pelgrims die een deel van het heilige land mee naar huis willen nemen als souvenirs en geschenken.<\/a><\/p>\n

Olijfhout is erg hard en wordt gewaardeerd om zijn duurzaamheid, kleur, hoge verbrandingstemperatuur en interessante nerfpatronen. Vanwege het commerci\u00eble belang van de vrucht, en de langzame groei en relatief kleine omvang van de boom, zijn olijfhout en zijn producten relatief duur. Veel voorkomende toepassingen van het hout zijn: keukengerei, gesneden houten kommen, snijplanken, mooie meubels en decoratieve items. Het gele of lichtgroenbruine hout is vaak fijn geaderd met een donkerdere tint; omdat het erg hard en dichtkorrelig is, wordt het gewaardeerd door houtbewerkers.<\/p>\n
