Die Tradition der Herstellung des Kunsthandwerks begann im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. unter byzantinischer Herrschaft in Bethlehem – der nach wie vor die Hauptstadt ist, in der das Handwerk hergestellt wird – nach dem Bau der Geburtskirche. Griechisch-orthodoxe M\u00f6nche brachten den Anwohnern bei, wie man Olivenholz<\/a> schnitzt. Die Kunst entwickelte sich und wurde zu einem wichtigen Wirtschaftszweig in Bethlehem und den umliegenden St\u00e4dten im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert, als italienische und franziskanische Handwerker auf Pilgerreise in die Gegend – inzwischen unter der Herrschaft der Osmanen – den Bewohnern beibrachten, wie man schnitzt. Seitdem wird die Tradition Generation f\u00fcr Generation weitergegeben und wird von den Nachkommen der urspr\u00fcnglichen lokalen Schnitzer dominiert.<\/p>\n
